My work focuses on views of the military from the perspective of a civilian and those who serve. The attraction or repulsion to military tactics, lifestyle, equipment, and mindsets by those serving in times of armed conflict and those observing intrigues me. During deployments service and satisfaction with “the mission” do not necessarily go hand in hand. Likewise being a civilian does not equate to opposition, but the polar opposites of these groups are where I find myself investigating. Some questions that I explore through my work are: Why are people attracted to the military? What aspects do civilians find violent or offensive? What does the dark humor that exists in the military portray to an outsider? How can traumatic experiences be expressed visually? What are the lasting effects of those experiences? How do civilians adapt with living in an environment where a warzone is not somewhere to be deployed, but a place to live? These types of questions and opposing elements such as innocence/adulthood, or pacifist/militarist inform my work. Images gain a plurality in meaning based on the on the viewer’s personal opinion-the militarist will see discipline and survival where the pacifist can only see violence.
